Matthew 9 The Workers Are Few 35Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. 36When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field." There are two roads to greater effectiveness and fruit-bearing in the work we have been called to. One is to work harder, and the other is to work smarter. In Matthew: chapters 4 thru 9, we see Jesus teaching us all about God and then showing us what God is like through the many miracles, healings and deliverances he performs amongst a wide diversity of people, age groups, and ethnicities. Matthew 8 The Man With Leprosy 1When he came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him. 2A man with leprosy came and knelt before him and said, "Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean." 3Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. "I am willing," he said. "Be clean!" Immediately he was cured of his leprosy. 4Then Jesus said to him, "See that you don't tell anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift Moses commanded, as a testimony to them." Whereas in the Sermon on the Mount, we see a great deal of Jesus’ teaching about God, what God is like. Yet, in chapter 8, we see Jesus doing things to show what God is like. The first four stories show Jesus healing people various types of diseases, including those who those who were spiritually sick (ie. had demons). We see Jesus restoring people from spiritual and physical illnesses that kept them from experiencing life in its fullest. These incidents show

Salt and light were important commodities in the 1st century world. Salt was very important to preserve and protect the food, especially meat, from getting bad. Lighting was done a whole lot differently than we know today, with our modern forms of electricity. Matthew 3 16As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. We don’t know much about Jesus’ life growing up, except that he worked with his hands as a carpenter, and when he was a teenager he was found in the temple teaching at a very high level that astounded the elders of the church. Today there are those who look to the stars for guidance, we call it astrology. People read the paper each day to see what their astrological sign is telling them. But these astrologers from the Far East, also called the “three wise men”, were looking for a king. When they found Jesus they worshipped him.
