Revelation 22 16 “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. Daily Bread 2011 – Revelation 19 6 Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude, like the roar of rushing waters and like loud peals of thunder, shouting: “Hallelujah! For our Lord God Almighty reigns. 7 Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready. 8 Fine linen, bright and clean, was given her to wear.” (Fine linen stands for the righteous acts of God’s holy people.) 9 Then the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!” And he added, “These are the true words of God.”10 At this I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, “Don’t do that! I am a fellow servant with you and with your brothers and sisters who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For it is the Spirit of prophecy who bears testimony to Jesus.” What Does This Mean? While chapter 18 dealt mostly with the Fall of Babylon, chapter 19 goes into the final judg

Warning to Escape Babylon’s Judgment 4 Then I heard another voice from heaven say: “‘Come out of her, my people,’ so that you will not share in her sins, so that you will not receive any of her plagues; 5 for her sins are piled up to heaven, and God has remembered her crimes. 6 Give back to her as she has given; pay her back double for what she has done. Pour her a double portion from her own cup. 7 Give her as much torment and grief as the glory and luxury she gave herself. In her heart she boasts, ‘I sit enthroned as queen. I am not a widow; I will never mourn.’ 8 Therefore in one day her plagues will overtake her: death, mourning and famine. She will be consumed by fire, for mighty is the Lord God who judges her. What Does This Mean? Although Babylon is spoken of here figuratively, most commentators think this is relating to the Roman Empire. The first of these commands sums up what most of the book of Revelation has been about. “Come out of her, my

12 “The ten horns you saw are ten kings who have not yet received a kingdom, but who for one hour will receive authority as kings along with the beast. 13 They have one purpose and will give their power and authority to the beast. 14 They will make war against the Lamb, but the Lamb will overcome them because he is Lord of lords and King of kings—and with him will be his called, chosen and faithful followers.” What Does This Mean? Most of chapter 17 focuses on the beast, the prostitute who serves and is under the beast’s authority, and then also these ten kings whose purpose is to give power and authority to the beast. The woman is identified as Babylon, the great mother of prostitutes and of abominations of the earth. And while there is plenty of sexual immorality, the two main things associated with the woman are the deception of the people of the earth and the cause of the blood of the saints. Seven Angels With Seven Plagues 1 I saw in heaven another great and marvelous sign: seven angels with the seven last plagues—last, because with them God’s wrath is completed. 2 And I saw what looked like a sea of glass mixed with fire and, standing beside the sea, those who had been victorious over the beast and his image and over the number of his name. They held harps given them by God 3 and sang the song of Moses the servant of God and the song of the Lamb: “Great and marvelous are your deeds, Lord God Almighty. Just and true are your ways, King of the ages. 4 Who will not fear you, O Lord, and bring glory to your name? For you alone are holy. All nations will come and worship before you, for your righteous acts have been revealed.” What Does This Mean? One of the challenges in the book of Revelation is that certain scenes recall earlier depictions, and one wonders if, for instance, this is new series of judgments, or referring the past scenes of chapters 4, 8, 12, a

The Lamb and the 144,000 1 Then I looked, and there before me was the Lamb, standing on Mount Zion, and with him 144,000 who had his name and his Father’s name written on their foreheads. 2 And I heard a sound from heaven like the roar of rushing waters and like a loud peal of thunder. In this second interlude, John see two witnesses who are given the power to give testimony (same word for the word martyr), and to prophesy with the authority and power of God. Daily Bread 2011 – Revelation 10 8 Then the voice that I had heard from heaven spoke to me once more: “Go, take the scroll that lies open in the hand of the angel who is standing on the sea and on the land.”9 So I went to the angel and asked him to give me the little scroll. He said to me, “Take it and eat it. It will turn your stomach sour, but ‘in your mouth it will be as sweet as honey.’” 10 I took the little scroll from the angel’s hand and ate it. It tasted as sweet as honey in my mouth, but when I had eaten it, my stomach turned sour. 11 Then I was told, “You must prophesy again about many peoples, nations, languages and kings.” What Does This Mean? In chapters 10 and 11, there is a brief interlude to the trumpets and judgments we have heard about in the last couple of chapters. Another mighty angel comes down from heaven and has almost divine characteristics, though it is clear the angel is not Jesus. Response to the 6th Trumpet 20 The rest of mankind that were not killed by these plagues still did not repent of the work of their hands; they did not stop worshiping demons, and idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone and wood—idols that cannot see or hear or walk. 21 Nor did they repent of their murders, their magic arts, their sexual immorality or their thefts. What Does This Mean? As the fifth and sixth trumpets are blown, two terrible things begin to happen. At the sound of the fifth trumpet a star fell from heaven that opened the shaft to the Abyss, where death and destruction and apparently lots more demonic forces were let loose. This was symbolized by locusts. Not ordinary locusts that had been seen in biblical times destroying crops et al, but locusts which had the power to torment but not kill anyone whose forehead had not been sealed with mark of God. The Seventh Seal and the Golden Censer 1 When he opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour.2 And I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and to them were given seven trumpets. 3 Another angel, who had a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. He was given much incense to offer, with the prayers of all the saints, on the golden altar before the throne. 4 The smoke of the incense, together with the prayers of the saints, went up before God from the angel’s hand. 5 Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and hurled it on the earth; and there came peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning and an earthquake. What Does This Mean? Following the Seven Seals, there are Seven Trumpets which begin to announce the judgments upon the earth. In chapter 8, we see the first four judgments, which wreak havoc on God’s Creation. I.e. The trees, grass, mountains, rivers, springs, sun, moon and stars. Notice it is not comple

The Great Multitude in White Robes 9 After this I looked and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and in front of the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. 10 And they cried out in a loud voice: “Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.” 11 All the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures. Amen!” What Does This Mean? At the beginning of Revelation 7, there is a pregnant pause signaling that something momentous is about to happen.
