Fearfully and Wonderfully Made!

Psalm 139 is probably one of the greatest psalms David wrote. He describes the intimate nature of God knowing us and creating us. And it makes sense doesn't it that the one who created us would know very detail about us. David goes so far as to say God knows when we go out and come back in. He knows our schedules better than we do. And he knows what we are going to say before we say it. As David ponders this all he can conclude is, "such knowledge is too wonderful for me."

If anyone wanted to make an argument that life begins at conception, verses 13-18 are pretty clear about God's involvement in the process of bringing a human life into existence. In fact, the bible says all of our days are ordained for us even before we are born. All this leads David to say, "I am fearfully and wonderfully made!" If you are having a problem with self esteem this is the verse to read. Maybe instead of self esteem, we could call it "God esteem". Meaning our worth is not determined just by what we think about ourselves, and certainly not only what others think of us, but our identity is formed by how God thinks of us. When God made us he declared, "It is good!" As someone once said, "God doesn't create junk!"

So what would it mean if today and every day you remember who has made you? How could knowing the God of the universe knows exactly who you are and is with you each day in every aspect of your life? My sense is that the decisions we make and how we treat others would change. My sense is that you and I would move closer to who we really are and what we are meant to do. My sense is we would care a lot less about what others think of us, and a lot more about our identity in Christ, who proved his love for us by dying on a cross. My sense is these realities would cause us to give God continual praise and thanksgiving for the gift of life He has given us. I hope this helps start your day on a positive note, as you remember not only who you are, but also whose you are!

Psalm 139:1-6
For the director of music. Of David. A psalm.

1 You have searched me, Lord,
and you know me.
2 You know when I sit and when I rise;
you perceive my thoughts from afar.
3 You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways.
4 Before a word is on my tongue
you, Lord, know it completely.
5 You hem me in behind and before,
and you lay your hand upon me.
6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too lofty for me to attain.

Psalm 139:13-18
13 For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.
17 How precious to me are your thoughts God!
How vast is the sum of them!
18 Were I to count them,
they would outnumber the grains of sand—
when I awake, I am still with you.

Judges 2:6-15
Disobedience and Defeat
6 After Joshua had dismissed the Israelites, they went to take possession of the land, each to their own inheritance. 7 The people served the Lord throughout the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him and who had seen all the great things the Lord had done for Israel.

8 Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died at the age of a hundred and ten. 9 And they buried him in the land of his inheritance, at Timnath Heres in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.

10 After that whole generation had been gathered to their ancestors, another generation grew up who knew neither the Lord nor what he had done for Israel. 11 Then the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord and served the Baals. 12 They forsook the Lord, the God of their ancestors, who had brought them out of Egypt. They followed and worshiped various gods of the peoples around them. They aroused the Lord’s anger 13 because they forsook him and served Baal and the Ashtoreths. 14 In his anger against Israel the Lord gave them into the hands of raiders who plundered them. He sold them into the hands of their enemies all around, whom they were no longer able to resist. 15 Whenever Israel went out to fight, the hand of the Lord was against them to defeat them, just as he had sworn to them. They were in great distress.

2 Corinthians 10:1-11
Paul’s Defense of His Ministry
10 By the humility and gentleness of Christ, I appeal to you—I, Paul, who am “timid” when face to face with you, but “bold” toward you when away! 2 I beg you that when I come I may not have to be as bold as I expect to be toward some people who think that we live by the standards of this world. 3 For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. 4 The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. 5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. 6 And we will be ready to punish every act of disobedience, once your obedience is complete.

7 You are judging by appearances. If anyone is confident that they belong to Christ, they should consider again that we belong to Christ just as much as they do. 8 So even if I boast somewhat freely about the authority the Lord gave us for building you up rather than tearing you down, I will not be ashamed of it. 9 I do not want to seem to be trying to frighten you with my letters. 10 For some say, “His letters are weighty and forceful, but in person he is unimpressive and his speaking amounts to nothing.” 11 Such people should realize that what we are in our letters when we are absent, we will be in our actions when we are present.
